Perry Glass Art Collection

Overview

The Perry Glass Art Collection was developed as an extension of Clancy & Theys’ award-winning Glass Light Hotel & Gallery project. Originally built in 1900, this historic building has served as a department store, movie theater, and, most recently, office space for the City of Norfolk. Now, it elegantly showcases glass art from local and internationally renowned artists, with rotating exhibits displayed throughout the adjoining hotel.

Work on the four-story, 14,354 SF museum began with abatement and demolition of the interior—stripping it down to its original brick and concrete structure. Over the last century, sections of the building had settled by as much as seven inches, requiring extensive structural stabilization. This process included installing helical piles, concrete pile caps with a structural slab, and tube steel columns. Additional work included the installation of three new staircases, an elevator, a new roof, complete mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, two new restrooms, and updated finishes throughout. Many of the building’s original façade elements were either restored or replaced to preserve its historic character.

The museum now occupies two floors, while the upper levels serve as storage for the gallery and hotel.
