The now 85-person Virginia Division was just a small team of five when Conklin joined the company in 1991. Under the mentorship of then-Vice President and Division Manager Tommy Glasgow, Conklin began his career with the company as a project manager. When Glasgow retired in 2007, Conklin stepped into the role of vice president.

“I was fortunate to have some great partners and mentors during my time at Clancy & Theys, and the one thing they instilled in me early on was the importance of our people,” Conklin reflects. “Of the many things that have changed over the course of my career, one thing has always stayed true – our people are our greatest asset.”

Throughout his tenure at Clancy & Theys, Conklin is best recognized for his several hospitality projects along the Virginia Beach oceanfront, such as the Courtyard by Marriott, Springhill Suites, and Sheraton hotel projects. His record expands beyond the Hampton Roads region, working on projects like The Martin Agency in Richmond, and notable Casino Club at The Greenbrier, the country’s only private casino in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. His colleagues and clients will remember his legacy of delivering complex projects on tight timelines and viewing every obstacle as a new challenge to overcome.

Baker Glasgow, Clancy & Theys president, reflects on Conklin’s legacy at the company:
“Dean’s legacy is marked by his dedication, leadership, and passion for others. Growing up in the Hampton Roads area, it’s been a distinct pleasure of mine to watch this division flourish under his leadership. While we’ll certainly miss Dean, I have no doubt his legacy will continue to inspire our team for years to come. We’re incredibly grateful for his contributions to our team and wish him the best of luck in this next chapter.”

Conklin plans to spend this next chapter visiting his children and grandchildren across the Southeast and driving to Raleigh for North Carolina State University football games.

Taking the helm following Conklin’s retirement, Clancy & Theys is proud to promote Project Executive Brian Viau as the Virginia Division’s vice president of construction. As a 20-year veteran at Clancy & Theys, Viau brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of the legacy and values the company stands by to ensure quality work in the evolving landscape of the Virginia Division.
